Why discuss health before conception?
Some health conditions and medicines need review before pregnancy begins. Diabetes, thyroid disease, high blood pressure and mental health conditions are examples to raise during a preconception visit. Your treating doctors may need to coordinate a plan.
Bring details of previous pregnancies, operations and any significant family history. Discuss what matters to you, including concerns from an earlier pregnancy.
Review medicines, supplements and vaccines
Include prescriptions, medicines bought without a prescription, herbal preparations and supplements in your medicine list. Do not assume that a product is suitable simply because it is described as natural. Your doctor can review benefits and risks before recommending a change.
Bring vaccination records if available. Ask which vaccinations or other preventive measures are appropriate and whether timing matters before trying to conceive.
Nutrition and daily life
Folic acid before pregnancy helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects. Ask about the supplement and dose suitable for you rather than choosing a high dose on your own. Food habits, activity and tobacco or alcohol use can also be discussed.
For practical advice, describe your usual meals, work schedule and any dietary restrictions. A plan should be workable in your everyday life.
Turn the discussion into next steps
Ask whether any tests, medicine changes or specialist appointments are recommended before trying. Not everyone needs the same investigations. Clarify who will review results and when you should return.
You may find it helpful to bring a partner, but make room for your own questions and a private conversation if you want one. Keep a copy of the agreed plan.
